Keywords: Biocatalysis, enzyme engineering, STREAM

Description:

This is a course that’s focused on Biocatalysis which includes introduction of molecular biology tools for enzyme discovery, optimization and engineering, mostly aiming industrial production using enzymes as biocatalysts. This course includes introduction of many concepts that has basic knowledge components (basic biology, chemistry etc.) as well as more advanced components that can only be conveyed to the students through discussion of recent literature examples.
Thus, in line with STREAM model, different in-class and out-of-class content/activities are designed in addition to in-class and out-of class content transfer (assignments including quizes, reading research articles, group study and presentations, case studies)

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain how enzymes can be utilized for biocatalysis and for industrial production
  • Design and apply approaches for discovering and engineering enzymes for biotechnology applications
  • Compare and evlauate different methods for enzyme engineering and optimization
  • Describe engineering of organisms by metabolic intervention for biocatalytic production purposes
Resources Tasks Supports

Out-of-class activity

- 3 weeks of the course content recently covered
-Literature research article on the topic (as an example - starting point)
-Reading materials (literature review articles)

-Read/summarize main points of the research article in a few sentences
-Critically assess the research article
-Answer a set of questions based on research article & course content -Upload your individual answers

-Blog will be created on Blackboard for students to ask their questions (can be answered by teacher or students)

Individual reports submitted

In-class Activity

-Individual answers by each student for the preceding out-of-class activity
-Literature sources

-Students gather in groups & discuss their individual answers/reflections
-Students prepare a final report as group report with the best answers/explanations

-In-class supervision
-Peer feedback/assessment/discussion
-Feedback will be given on Blackboard by the teacher on the final submitted group reports

Final report submitted

In-class Preparation

- 1-2 Literature articles where similar enzymes/products are discussed
-Computational tools for genome analysis and protein structure analysis will be introduced

-Students will (in groups) design a biocatalyst (enzyme) for a product that they are assigned
-Answer a set of questions to demonstrate implementation of their design step-by-step
-Presentation of results/answers in 5-10 min

-In-class supervision
-Peer feedback to presentations
-Peer discussions in groups

In-class activity (presentations & answering questions)
