In this learning activity, students will have the opportunity to participate in an authentic and personally relevant task using a flipped classroom design. Students will use Google Hangouts and Google Docs as media-rich synchronous online communication tools, critically appraise the use of media-rich synchronous online communication as a pedagogical tool, and develop ideas for using media-rich synchronous online communication as a pedagogical tool in their own workplaces.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will develop an understanding of types of media-rich synchronous online learning activities
  • Students will develop an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages in using media-rich synchronous online communication as a pedagogical tool
  • Students will develop a level of familiarisation with the Google suite of synchronous communication tools including Google Drive, Google Docs and Google Hangouts
  • Students will develop a learner’s perspective of the use of media-rich synchronous online learning activities

Required readings

Task 1: Pre-reading

The purpose of this task is for students to become familiar with and begin to critically analyse the literature surrounding the use of media-rich synchronous online communication as a pedagogical tool.

Asynchronous discussion forum set up in the online learning environment to allow students to ask preliminary questions about the task and the reading.

All students will require access to a computer that has a microphone and speakers or headphones and reliable broadband internet connection.

Task 2: Using media-rich synchronous online communication tools

The purpose of this task is for students to experience a learning activity incorporating media-rich synchronous online communication, and to develop a list of situations within their workplace when they could incorporate media-rich synchronous online communication as a pedagogical tool.

A Google Docs document that is commenced with an outline of the topics to be covered during the ‘Hangout’.
