Instructions for how to access Flipgrid are provided on Canvas page.
Guidelines for what to include in the video.
Teacher’s introduction video completed prior to start of the module.

Canvas
Padlet

Padlet Brainstorm

Teacher posts the starting question: How can we define society?
Encourage all students to post at least one statement.
Students add one or more single sentence ideas.
Ask students to then read through all of the posts and pick out the consistent themes, link ideas, identify differing/clashing perspectives.
Themes can then be colour coded and posts tagged by students. This may stimulate discussion about which theme posts should be categorised into.

Zoom

Zoom Chat Discussion

Provide students with an example of how a scientific discovery has shaped society (e.g. WIFI and remote learning)
Prompt students to think of specific examples to illustrate the relationships/impacts
Allow thinking time and encourage every student to post to the chat
Reinforce strong examples

Week 1 – Asynchronous learning tasks

YouTube
Canvas Quiz

Videos, Reading and Quiz

Students may need to be shown how to navigate to the resources in Canvas.
These are independent asynchronous activities; however, students may seek support via email.

Canvas - Week 1 Discussion

Weekly Discussion Tasks - review, reflection and discussion

Instructions for how to post to discussion are included on Canvas
Guidelines for how to write a researched and referenced reflective response included on Canvas
Guidelines for how to critically engage with others for this task
Teacher to review and interact with online discussion to reinforce expectations, desired interactions and acknowledge interesting ideas and contributions

Week 2 – Synchronous, The philosophy of science and the scientific method

Canvas Collaboration
Google Sites
Google Drive Login

Collaborative research and Google Site Building

Introduce the branches of science
Break the class up using the Zoom Breakout Room function.
Split class into groups of 3 – 4 students. Each group will research a different branch of science.
Reinforce the need to collaborate and interact in the breakout room.
Outline the need to divide the task between group members

Students own Google Drive, set up using Insearch email address
Zoom
Canvas collaboration
Google Slides - The Branches of Science, Comments questions and observations

Peer feedback

Prompt questions for discussion;
What does society want form this branch of science?
Which branches of science can we link to technological advances?
What are some of the challenges currently under investigation in each branch?

Additional information

The students are culturally diverse, have varying English language skills and varying educational backgrounds. They may be very unfamiliar with Australia educational practices such as interactive and collaborative, inquiry based or student-centred teaching practices. They also have limited social supports outside of the program.

This module is the introduction to the subject; the focus is on setting the direction for the subject, establishing expectations, introducing the content and building rapport between students and with the teacher. These introductory activities are designed to support the development of a learning community (Nguyet Diep, et al., 2019, p. 238), familiarise students with how to navigate Canvas and other ICT that will be used throughout the delivery of the subject.
